Republican Steve Hilton and Democrat Xavier Becerra earned the most votes in the four-county Sacramento region during Tuesday’s gubernatorial primary, according to early election results.

Hilton won about 31% of the region’s early votes. He performed strongly in Placer and El Dorado counties, and in most rural areas, according to returns as of 9 p.m. Tuesday. 

Becerra won about 26% of the vote, picking up the most support near the Sacramento and Elk Grove urban cores, along with Davis and parts of Woodland.

Democrat Tom Steyer ran a distant third with 16% of the vote. He only outperformed Becerra and Hilton in a handful of isolated precincts.

This Abridged by PBS KVIE analysis shows how the early vote tally went across the region — by precinct — according to reports from county election departments. Placer and El Dorado counties did not provide access to the vote totals by precinct, so only countywide totals are available there.

In the maps below, blue areas show precincts where Becerra earned the highest number of votes. Red areas show precincts won by Hilton. Users can hover over the precincts to see more information about the area and the exact count as of 9 p.m. Tuesday. El Dorado and Placer areas show countywide totals.
