The Abridged version:

  • This new Abridged series asks famous Sacramento-area residents about their favorite restaurants.
  • First up: Anh Phoong, the personal injury attorney known for her billboards and slogans.
  • Phoong’s list of favorites includes YD Tofu House, Đức Hương Sandwiches and Ruen Thai Restaurant.

This is Fame To Fork, an Abridged series asking locals of note where they eat around the Sacramento region.

Something wrong? Call Anh Phoong — just not when she’s at Korean barbecue.

Northern California’s favorite personal injury attorney grew up in Antelope, graduated from American River College and Sacramento State and works today out of her office in Rosemont. While Phoong Law’s eye-catching billboards appear everywhere she practices, from San Diego to Las Vegas, she spends most of her working lunches and celebratory dinners at Sacramento-area restaurants.

One particular favorite: Oz Korean BBQ, where Phoong celebrates staff members’ birthdays and hosts office parties. Peter Kim’s popular all-you-can-eat spot has a location three miles down Highway 50 from Phoong’s office and others in Elk Grove and Folsom.

Oz’s tabletop grills and colorful cocktails lend themselves to a good time. The vibe is a bit more reserved at Phoong’s other favorite Korean restaurant, YD Tofu House, which has locations in Rosemont and Hollywood Park plus a takeout-only operation near the Elk Grove border.

Like many others, Phoong comes to YD Tofu House as much for the entrees as the banchan, complimentary Korean starters that preface most meals. Kimchi and bean sprouts are standard, but YD earned its reputation for the region’s best banchan with dishes such as stir-fried dried anchovies. For a main, Phoong recommends the short ribs.

“The flavors are just so amazing. They’re so good,” Phoong said.

Phoong, who has Chinese and Vietnamese ancestry, agrees with the general consensus on Sacramento’s best bánh mì: Đức Hương Sandwiches in Little Saigon. Get the No. 1 with grilled pork (bánh mì thịt nướng), she said, at the sandwich shop and market on Stockton Boulevard — or its four sister locations if driving through San Jose.

She’ll seek out Ruen Thai Restaurant in Roseville for curries as well, or opt for Coconut on T (with potatoes added) if visiting her Land Park office. The latter also has locations in River Park, Midtown Sacramento, Arden Arcade and Elk Grove.

For higher-end business meetings, Phoong usually picks Ella Dining Room & Bar, the Selland Family Restaurants cornerstone concept in Downtown Sacramento. But on an average day, you’re more likely to find her some place comparatively casual.
