The Abridged version:

  • Elk Grove Unified School District selected David Reilly as their next superintendent. He will start in the role on Jan. 1.
  • His appointment comes as the current superintendent, Christopher Hoffman, prepares to retire after more than a decade at the helm.

Elk Grove Unified School District trustees have selected their new superintendent. David Reilly, currently the district’s associate superintendent, will begin in the role Jan. 1.

After 11 years as superintendent, Christopher Hoffman announced in August his plans to retire.

His departure kicked off a months-long search that garnered applications from 17 “highly qualified candidates,” according to a press release from the district.

“At any other time, David’s decades of experience as an educator, his passion for learning, and his dedication to our district would make him an outstanding leader for our district,” Michael Vargas, President of the Elk Grove Unified Board said in a statement. “But, in this unique moment, when budgets are tight, economic uncertainty is high, and social change is constant, David is uniquely qualified to take the helm.”

Reilly has spent the last decade at Elk Grove. Before that, he was an English teacher, vice principal, principal and assistant superintendent at Sequoia Union High School District in the Bay Area.
