SUMMARY:Davis Arts Center Wetland Exhibit Opening September 20th
DESCRIPTION:YoloSol presents\nGood Fire\, Living Water: The Gifts of a Marsh Economy\nSeptember 20-November 13\, 2026\nDavis Arts Center \n“Tule (Schoenoplectus acutus var. occidentalis) has been my creative muse for 30 years. It still thrives in the rivers and marshes of California… Tule\, along with cattail\, is at the heart of the marsh economy… I am now in the process of working with ecologists and scientists to renew our understanding of how we can restore the wetlands. It is clear that cultural knowledge about tule is a critical part of the tools required in this endeavor.” – Diana Almendariz \nA public exhibition on wetland stewardship featuring the eco-cultural and artistic practice of Wintun/Maidu culture-bearer Diana Almendariz and her daughters Ooti Maxine and Christina Almendariz. SUMMARY:Intro to Intaglio (Etching)
DESCRIPTION:Why did artists like Francisco Goya\, Pablo Picasso\, Edgar Degas\, Käthe Kollwitz\, M. C. Escher\, and Rembrandt feel drawn to this rich and versatile process? \nEtching opens the door to endless creative possibilities. Its distinctive lines\, expressive range of mark-making\, and deeply tactile nature have fascinated artists for centuries. \nIn this one-day class\, we’ll dive into the essentials of etching. Students will learn how to prepare a copper plate with a hard ground and create their own line-based image. From there\, we’ll explore how to ink the plate and pull a finished print. By the end\, students will leave with both the skills and confidence to continue exploring this compelling medium. \nWHEN: November 8th\, 10-4pm \nWHERE: Myrtle Press inside Verge \nAbout the Instructors \nHoward Levine has been an active printmaker for the past fifty-seven years. Howard taught printmaking and drawing for Sierra College for almost twenty-five years. At Carriage House Press\, Grass Valley he had students engaged in all processes: intaglio\, relief\, litho and monotype for over 45 years. Howard has a M.A. from San Francisco State with an emphasis on printmaking\, mainly lithography. He also is a painter\, drawer and for-site artist. After dismantling his long time studio and gallery in Grass Valley\, CA. he and his wife moved to Sacramento and joined Myrtle Press. \nChanel Mace is a geometric abstract artist and printmaker whose work explores the intersection of organic sensation and structured space. Originally from Sacramento\, Chanel holds a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and studied at Central Saint Martins in London. She completed a yearlong postgraduate residency at The Wrocław School of Printmaking in Poland. She then spent eight years living and working in Australia. While in Sydney\, she was deeply involved in the local printmaking community\, working out of The Workshop Arts Centre in Willoughby and serving as acting Secretary of the North Sydney Printmakers Association. After a decade abroad\, she returned home to Sacramento\, where she now works out of Myrtle Press and is a member of the California Society of Printmakers.@chanelmaceart\, www.chanelmace.com
