SUMMARY:Lipstick at Old Ironsides
DESCRIPTION:From Cultural Capital by Chris Macias: \nIt’s hard to think of Sacramento’s dance scene without Lipstick in the mix. For more than a quarter-century\, DJs Shaun Slaughter\, Adam Jay and Roger Carpio created a Sacramento indie-dance institution with the monthly Lipstick party. But after all these years\, and nearly 300 gigs later\, Lipstick is going silent. Kind of. \nSaturday marks the final night with Lipstick as a monthly event. But before dropping tears on your favorite LCD Soundsystem or Ladytron vinyl: Slaughter insists that Lipstick will return in some way.   \n“After 26 years\, I’d like to give every event under the Lipstick banner all the energy we have and it’s hard to do that every month\,” he said in a Facebook message. “I really just wanna be excited every time we do it and for people to feel that.” \nNow\, the Lipstick crew will catch its collective breath. Shaun says Lipstick could re-emerge as an occasional special event or be re-shaped another way. But after Saturday\, Lipstick as a monthly will be just a memory. And those euphoric floor-stomping nights will very much be missed.  \nMore details here. \nWant events like this sent directly to your email? SUMMARY:Lorraine García-Nakata: "Knowledge We Carry" – Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:From Cultural Capital by Chris Macias: \nLorraine Garcia-Nakata’s work is represented on one of Sacramento’s definitive murals\, and soon you can see more of her artistry up close. She’s among the two living members of the Royal Chicano Air Force who created the 14-feet-by-100-feet mural in Southside Park and known for large-scale works like the stunning “Precious Knowledge” on pastel and paper. \nHead to Blue Line Arts in Roseville on Saturday for the opening of her “Knowledge We Carry” solo show. Hear from Lorraine during a 4 p.m. lecture before viewing her work on a variety of media\, including a sculpture from 1974. The show runs through June 20. Highly recommended. \nMore details here. \nWant events like this sent directly to your email? Sign up for our weekly things to do newsletter here.

SUMMARY:Vinyl Funday at Mattie Groves Brewery – BYOV
DESCRIPTION:From Cultural Capital by Chris Macias: \nFor those who enjoy beer and vinyl records\, “BYOV” is the definition of a good time. “Bring Your Own Vinyl” events have become an increasingly popular facet of the local brewery and bar landscape. They’re spaces where record collectors and hopheads share favorite albums over a community stereo\, waxing nostalgic about favorite tracks between sips. \nOver at Mattie Groves Brewery in Midtown\, “Vinyl Funday” has been a monthly fixture for nearly two years. Each session has a theme\, such as indie rock\, glam rock\, alt-country and 1980s albums. This Sunday\, participants are invited to spin a side of vinyl by local bands. \nMore details here. \nWant events like this sent directly to your email? SUMMARY:Salsa the night away while supporting a heartfelt art project
DESCRIPTION:From Cultural Capital by Chris Macias: \nThe details: \n\nCasa de Español\, 1101 R St.\, Sacramento\n6 p.m.\, May 30 (Saturday)\n$10 in advance\, $15 at the door\n\nSince 2019\, Janine Mapurunga’s camera has been focused on a community of Spanish-speaking elders in Sacramento known as Manitos. She was inspired by the close relationship she shared with a grandmother who raised her in Brazil and is driven to share the stories of these senior Sacramentans. \nThrough years of documenting their oral histories and capturing their portraits\, Mapurunga is producing a bilingual photo book and short documentary film called “Bien Juntitos” (“Well Together”). Her goal is to have the book included in California’s school curriculum and the film screened internationally at festivals. \nThe process is nearly complete. All the photos are shot. The film is in the final stages of editing. Now\, she just needs the financial support to cross that finish line. That includes an online fundraiser and plans to establish relationships with larger funders and sponsors. \n“Fiesta Latina” on Saturday at Casa de Español is geared as a way to dance toward the goal. It’s a night of live music\, salsa dancing and community celebration with funds going toward “Bien Juntitos.” Clips from the film will be shown on a loop and her portrait of Maria Lopez\, a Manitos leader\, will be on display. \n“I struggle with the reality that elders\, who were once the most valued members of society throughout human history\, have become the most invisible and neglected\,” Mapurunga wrote in an email. “(My goal) is to share these stories as widely as possible in order to bring people together\, strengthen cultural understanding and inspire positive social change … We need to love and honor our elders while we can.” \nWant events like this sent directly to your email? Sign up for our weekly things to do newsletter here.
