SUMMARY:Get sketchy and make friends in Old Sacramento
DESCRIPTION:From Cultural Capital by Chris Macias: \n\nThe details:  \n\n\n\n\nThe Paperworks\, 1115 Front St.\, Sacramento\n\n\n\n10 a.m.\, June 27 (Saturday)\n\n\n\nFree\n\n\nOne of the best surprises from the recent Rituals of Mine show at Amatoria Fine Art Books was a spontaneous piece of art that sprung from the audience. As the band roared through its highly emotive blend of electronic music and jazz fusion\, Priya Ramchandran captured the scene on a small sketch book. By the end\, she produced a vibrant color sketch that captured the energy and fine details of the show\, wowing those who saw it. \n\n\n\nOn Saturday\, you can learn the finer points of sketching and join with others who enjoy the craft with Ramchandran and Urban Sketchers Sacramento. The event is free and open to all\, whether you’re a beginner or an emerging Picasso. The crew meets at various spots around the area\, this time posting up in Old Sacramento to sketch the surroundings. \n\n\n\nRamchandran runs Urban Sketchers Sacramento with Rebecca Huval\, a social worker and former editor for the Sacramento News & Review\, and Tatiana Jimenez\, a local artist and graphic designer. \n\n\n\n“Sketching on location can feel intimidating when you’re doing it solo\, and there’s something energizing about a group of people all sitting in the same spot capturing it in their own way\,” Ramchandran wrote in an email. “The group is free to join and free to attend\, and people show up with all kinds of experience levels\, from folks who’ve never drawn before to longtime architects and artists. That mix is part of what makes it fun.” \n\n\n\nMinimal supplies are needed for a sketching session. Ramchandran says a pen or pencil and a small sketchbook will suffice\, but watercolor and markers are welcome as well. More than anything\, bring an open mind and a love of art. \n\n\n\n“When you sit down to sketch a building or a street corner\, you start noticing details you’d walk right past otherwise\,” Ramchandran said. “It’s also meditative for me. It helps me calm down and stay in the present moment.” \n\nWant events like this sent directly to your email? Sign up for our weekly things to do newsletter here.

It all comes to an epic close on Saturday with the ninth annual Zine Megamall\, where Timeless Thrills will be filled with tables of fantastic zines. We’re especially looking forward to photo zines from the Nighted crew\, who are presenting the event\, along with Chip Parker and Claire Evans from Fresno. SUMMARY:Dive into blue with a maestro of Sacramento arts
DESCRIPTION:From Cultural Capital by Chris Macias: \n\n\n\n\n\nThe details:  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLatino Center of Arts and Culture\, 2700 Front St.\, Sacramento\n6 p.m.\, June 12 opening reception (Friday)\nFree entry\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nStan Padilla is respected as one of the region’s most respected elders of the artistic community. At 80 years old\, this fount of creativity and wisdom shows no signs of slowing down. He’s spent the last few years traveling around the planet\, gathering inspiration from such lands as Italy\, Mexico and Egypt. In between\, Padilla’s had a busy year with 50th anniversary celebrations of the Royal Chicano Air Force\, the art collective in which he is a core member. \nNow\, a show that Padilla’s been conceptualizing for a decade comes to light with Friday’s opening of “Caminos Mundiales” (“Global Roads”) at the Latino Center of Arts and Culture. It’s a multimedia adventure through Padilla’s paintings\, stained glass works\, photography and videos. \n“This is a new offering and it’s different than people are going to expect\,” said Padilla\, in a call from his Colfax home. “It’s more like a travelogue. I’m bringing all the results of all my travels back to show in Sacramento.” \nThe show carries a theme of “In Search of the Color Blue.” Padilla said it represents his journeys to gather blue pigments from around the world\, such as Maya Blue and Egyptian Blue. Along with blue lighting and the color blue spotlighted in many of the works\, Padilla says the show will feel more like stepping into a temple than an art exhibition. \n“Blue has always been a very sacred color in all ancient cultures\,” said Padilla. “It’s always shown reverence and sacredness … It’s a sense of the presence of our lives. That’s what blue gives us.” \nAlong with the upcoming show\, Padilla is rebuilding after a fallen oak tree crushed his home studio during recent windstorms. Thankfully\, he didn’t lose much artwork. The community has also stepped up to help Padilla during this trying time. \n“I have to keep going\,” said Padilla. “I’m healthy and I’m thankful.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\nWant events like this sent directly to your email? Sign up for our weekly things to do newsletter here.

SUMMARY:Capital City Surf Clash III
DESCRIPTION:From Cultural Capital by Chris Macias: \nSacramento’s about to transform into “Surf City U.S.A.” The nearest ocean breaks might be down in the San Francisco Bay Area\, but bands will be riding a mighty musical wave at Café Colonial for “Capital City Surf Clash III.” The festival brings headliner 3LH from the Pacific Northwest with The Greasy Gills from Oakland\, along with local surf rockers The Me Gustas and DangerForce 5. \nSurf music has been a fixture of the River City for decades. In 1963\, the Beach Boys recorded a live album\, “Beach Boys Concert\,” at the Sacramento Memorial Auditorium. The surf rock scene of the 1960s was boosted locally by such bands as The Jaguars and The Avengers. That torch of surf music was carried through the years with The Tiki Men\, who were fixtures of the local indie-rock scene in the 1990s\, along with The Pyronauts and the in-your-face punk approach from ¡Las Pulgas! \nThis third installment of “Capital City Surf Clash” features a spectrum of surfy sounds. Though the genre is known for its primarily instrumental and reverb-soaked tracks\, 3LH is the rare surf band to use vocals. \n“In some circles that would be a bit taboo\,” The Me Gustas guitarist Onedin “Odi” Giraldo said in an Instagram direct message. “But I love how surf music has influenced other genres. Some folks don’t even know that it’s surf behind some of their favorite tunes!” \nMore details here. \nWant events like this sent directly to your email? SUMMARY:Salsa the night away while supporting a heartfelt art project
DESCRIPTION:From Cultural Capital by Chris Macias: \nThe details: \n\nCasa de Español\, 1101 R St.\, Sacramento\n6 p.m.\, May 30 (Saturday)\n$10 in advance\, $15 at the door\n\nSince 2019\, Janine Mapurunga’s camera has been focused on a community of Spanish-speaking elders in Sacramento known as Manitos. She was inspired by the close relationship she shared with a grandmother who raised her in Brazil and is driven to share the stories of these senior Sacramentans. \nThrough years of documenting their oral histories and capturing their portraits\, Mapurunga is producing a bilingual photo book and short documentary film called “Bien Juntitos” (“Well Together”). Her goal is to have the book included in California’s school curriculum and the film screened internationally at festivals. \nThe process is nearly complete. All the photos are shot. The film is in the final stages of editing. Now\, she just needs the financial support to cross that finish line. That includes an online fundraiser and plans to establish relationships with larger funders and sponsors. \n“Fiesta Latina” on Saturday at Casa de Español is geared as a way to dance toward the goal. It’s a night of live music\, salsa dancing and community celebration with funds going toward “Bien Juntitos.” Clips from the film will be shown on a loop and her portrait of Maria Lopez\, a Manitos leader\, will be on display. \n“I struggle with the reality that elders\, who were once the most valued members of society throughout human history\, have become the most invisible and neglected\,” Mapurunga wrote in an email. “(My goal) is to share these stories as widely as possible in order to bring people together\, strengthen cultural understanding and inspire positive social change … We need to love and honor our elders while we can.” \nWant events like this sent directly to your email? Sign up for our weekly things to do newsletter here.
