SUMMARY:Lecture Night! Behind The Bee: How Local Reporting Brought a Wrongly Deported Mom Home
DESCRIPTION:How do local journalists stay relevant and do meaningful work in a rapidly shifting media landscape? How does a local institution like The Sacramento Bee understand its role in the community? This lecture is structured as a discussion between two reporters and two editors from The Sacramento Bee. They’ll share the inside scoop on how they broke and reported the story of Maria de Jesus Estrada Juarez\, a local mother who arrived in downtown Sacramento for her green card appointment but was instead arrested and deported by federal agents despite her DACA status. By the next morning\, she found herself in Mexico\, a country she hadn’t lived in for nearly 30 years. Sacramento Bee reporter Mathew Miranda broke this story and set off a 40-day frenzy that culminated at the US-Mexico border where Estrada Juarez was reunited with her daughter and allowed to return home thanks\, in large part\, to the reporting done by Miranda and Bee visual journalist Hector Amezcua. \nThis discussion will break down how local journalism makes a difference\, even in a media landscape that’s being rapidly reshaped by technology and new content-delivery models. You’ll walk away with a better understanding of what really happens in a busy newsroom when an important story breaks\, the rapid-fire decisions journalists and editors need to make\, and the challenges they face delivering the news in 2026. \nSpeakers from The Sacramento Bee:\nMathew Miranda\, Political Reporter\nHector Amezcua\, Visual Journalist\nChris Fusco\, Executive Editor\nMarcos Breton\, Director of Community Outreach & Opinion Journalism \nSchedule:\n6pm – Doors Open – grab a drink and mingle. We’ll have trivia questions on the screen and some surprises\n6:45pm – Program begins with an intro & prize giveaway\n7pm – Lecture begins\n8pm – Q&A\n8:15pm – Mingle\, discuss the lecture\, meet the speaker\n9pm – You don’t have to go home\, but you can’t stay here \nWhat to Expect:\nCommon Knowledge is Sacramento’s new bar lecture series. \nAt Common Knowledge we believe that learning something new is the most rewarding and fun thing you can do. We’re about bringing diverse people and ideas together to have a great time. \nThis event is open seating so come at 6pm to to grab a drink and a seat. Before the lecture we’ll have music and trivia questions on the screen. We’ll also have a fun\, low pressure “side quest” so you can win a free drink. \nThe lecture will last for 1 hour and is made for an intelligent\, general audience so you don’t need any specialized background to have a great time. After the lecture\, there will be 15 minutes for Q&A and then the bar will be open for another hour to hang out\, meet the speaker\, and discuss the ideas you just heard. \nThe bar will close at 9pm.
