DESCRIPTION:Explore local archives and see historical treasures during the 16th annual Sacramento Archives Crawl at the California State Archives\, California State Library\, Sacramento Public Library\, and Center for Sacramento History. It’s free and no ticket is needed! \nDuring the Crawl\, archives and special collections libraries from all over the Sacramento region set up at the four host archives in Downtown Sacramento to display items from their collections. \nAs a Crawler\, you’ll tour among the four host sites and visit with archivists\, see local history exhibits and special presentations\, learn about historic preservation and research\, and go on behind-the-scenes tours the public doesn’t normally get to go on. Free shuttle transportation between sites is provided. \nHOW TO CRAWL\nThe Crawl takes place at the following archives in Downtown Sacramento:\n-California State Archives (1020 O Street)\n-California State Library (914 Capitol Mall)\n-Center for Sacramento History (551 Sequoia Pacific Blvd)\n-Sacramento Central Library (828 I Street) \nYou can start and end your Crawl at any site and go in any order you’d like. At any site\, you can pick up a Crawl passport (get it stamped at three of the four locations for a fun set of commemorative coasters). \nPARKING & SHUTTLE BUS\nThe Center for Sacramento History is the only host site with free parking in a dedicated lot and on the street. Other sites have paid street parking or paid lots. A free shuttle\, operated by Amador Stage Lines\, services three stops along the Crawl route approximately every 20 minutes. Stops are in front of the Center for Sacramento History\, at 9th and I next to the Public Library\, and at 10th and O to serve the State Library and State Archives. \nSPECIAL EVENTS AT EACH SITE\nCalifornia State Archives – TOURS & EXHIBIT\n** See a new exhibit on the development of San Francisco’s waterfront\, Shaping a Shoreline: Stories from the Waterfront. The exhibit features one-of-a-kind original records on display for one day only\, including maps\, photographs\, correspondence\, and employee records.\n** Enjoy behind the scenes tours offered on the hour between 11 am and 3 pm. Archives Crawl attendees can also attend the California Museum for free the day of Crawl! \nCalifornia State Library – TOURS\n** Check out the California State Library’s special 30-minute guided “Tiny Tours.” Guests can explore highlights such as Frank Van Sloan’s 1929 mural “The War Through the Ages\,” a display of photographs from Johnny Cash’s San Quentin and Folsom Prison concerts\, Maynard Dixon’s mural “Pageant of Traditions\,” sculptures by Edward Field Sanford Jr.\, the library lobby\, Gillis Hall\, and circulation room. \nCenter for Sacramento History – TOURS & EXHIBIT\n** Collections storage vault tours will be held every half hour starting at 10 am (last tour at 3:30 pm). Valley High in South Sacramento will teem with dozens of award-winning authors\, along with educational resources\, live music and lowriders. \nThis festival includes Hollywood star power as well. Edward James Olmos of “Stand and Deliver” and “American Me” fame will deliver a keynote address. He’s also the co-founder of Empowering Latino Futures\, a nonprofit dedicated to Latino literacy and educational success. \n“For me\, it’s about bringing families together\, helping people discover great books and inspiring someone to say\, ‘I can write a book too\,’” Ordaz wrote in an email. “It’s also very personal. DESCRIPTION:From Cultural Capital by Chris Macias: \nLet’s close the camera phone for now and go back when photography required a wealth of patience and bit of magic in the darkroom. Miguel Gutierrez Jr. knows both worlds as a longtime photojournalist who can produce hundreds of images in minutes. He also pursues an artistic side that specializes in platinum-palladium printing. It’s a process that dates to the days of Alexander Graham Bell in the late 1800s with a meticulous wet chemistry process. \nFor the Sacramento-based photographer\, this method requires up to an hour and much trial-and-error to develop a single print. Take the time and the results are often stunning\, with a warm\, ethereal quality that works especially well for portraits. Now\, it’s time to view Gutierrez’s impeccable photos at NOBLE\, an exhibit of his work that runs Friday through Nov. 12 at The Gallery at 48 Natoma in Folsom. \nNOBLE’s portraits depict members of the Sacramento members cultural community\, including the botanist/musician Liz Lopez and muralist Jose Di Gregorio. The exhibit was months in the making\, from printing the photos to framing them from the show. \n“We walk around with phones in our pockets containing hundreds\, if not thousands of photographs\,” Gutierrez wrote in an email. “With this process\, I’m forced to work with a single image for an indeterminate amount of time and turn it into a physical object. The result is something handmade\, with imperfections\, texture and life.” \nYou can hear more about Gutierrez’s methods and inspirations at an artist reception on Oct. 2. Take time to sink into this imagery and appreciate its place in a world of instant gratification. \n“The process tests my skills as a photographer because it forces me to slow down and be much more intentional\,” Gutierrez wrote. “A lot more can go wrong\, but that’s also part of what I enjoy about the process.
