SUMMARY:The Ghosts of Smithfield House: A New Original Musical
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Resurrection Theatre at the California Stage Complex in Midtown Sacramento\, running from Oct 9 – Oct 31st. \n\nEver wanted to feel like you stepped straight into an episode of your favorite supernatural series?A haunted house. A skeptical ghost hunter. A charming spirit with unfinished business. \n\n\nThe Ghosts of Smithfield House is a haunting new musical that blends mystery\, humor\, heart\, and the supernatural into an unforgettable theatrical experience. When paranormal investigator and college professor Macy Carter arrives at the infamous Smithfield House\, she expects little more than creaking floorboards\, cold drafts\, and overblown ghost stories. What she doesn’t expect is the ghost of Captain Daniel Smithfield—a charming 19th-century spirit whose past may be more tangled with the house than even he may realize. As buried secrets rise to the surface and the walls of Smithfield House begin to reveal their history\, Macy finds herself caught between past and present\, logic and belief\, and a growing connection that defies time itself. But not every spirit in the house is as welcoming\, and some ghosts prefer to keep the past exactly where it belongs.Part supernatural mystery\, part romantic comedy\, and full of haunting melodies and heartfelt surprises\, The Ghosts of Smithfield House invites audiences into a campy supernatural world where love\, loss\, and unfinished business refuse to stay buried.

SUMMARY:Sacramento Latino Book & Family Festival
DESCRIPTION:From Cultural Capital by Chris Macias: \nLeticia Ordaz is recognized around the region as an anchor and reporter for KCRA3. At the same time\, she’s built a successful career as an author and publisher of bilingual children’s books. \nHer publishing house\, Cielito Lindo Books\, recently earned numerous medals at the International Latino Book Awards. Among them\, her husband Enrique Baeza received four gold medals\, one silver and a rising star award for “That Environmental Crusader Could Be Me!” An anthology from Cielito Lindo Books\, “We Come From Greatness\, Volume 2” written by 52 migrant youths also received a gold medal and rising star honors. \nYou’ll see this passion for youthful Latino literature on display at the Sacramento Latino Book & Family Festival. Valley High in South Sacramento will teem with dozens of award-winning authors\, along with educational resources\, live music and lowriders. \nThis festival includes Hollywood star power as well. Edward James Olmos of “Stand and Deliver” and “American Me” fame will deliver a keynote address. He’s also the co-founder of Empowering Latino Futures\, a nonprofit dedicated to Latino literacy and educational success. \n“For me\, it’s about bringing families together\, helping people discover great books and inspiring someone to say\, ‘I can write a book too\,’” Ordaz wrote in an email. “It’s also very personal. I didn’t grow up seeing many books that reflected me or my culture\, so when I see children light up because they see themselves in my story\, that means everything to me.” \nWant events like this sent directly to your inbox? SUMMARY:S'moresfest 2026
DESCRIPTION:Grab your flannel\, gather your camp crew\, and join us for S’moresfest 2026- an evening of community\, campfire fun\, and delicious s’mores\, all in support of the YMCA’s mission. \nOn Saturday\, October 10 at 5:30 PM\, the YMCA will host one of the most anticipated traditions of the evening: the S’mores Competition. Local chefs\, bakers\, and businesses will share their creative takes on the classic campfire treat\, and guests will sample each creation before voting to crown the “S’more of the Year.” \nWhile the s’mores may bring everyone together\, the purpose behind the event is what truly matters. Every ticket purchased and every dollar raised helps ensure that children\, families\, and older adults throughout our community have access to YMCA programs that build confidence\, improve health\, create belonging\, and provide opportunities regardless of financial circumstances. \nS’moresfest is a chance to celebrate the incredible businesses and community members who come together to support the Y\, reconnect with friends\, make new memories\, and invest in a stronger Sacramento for all. \nWe hope you’ll join us around the campfire and be part of something that makes a lasting difference.

SUMMARY:A Child’s-Eye Memoir of the Hippie Trail: Caleb Dardick in Conversation with Former California Department of Rehabilitation Director Tony Sauer
DESCRIPTION:Join author Caleb Dardick for a vivid reading and conversation celebrating his forthcoming memoir\, The Adventures of Superfreak: My Childhood on the Hippie Trail (Running Wild Press\, September 21\, 2026). Caleb will be in conversation with Tony Sauer\, former Director of the California Department of Rehabilitation\, longtime disability leader\, and close family friend. \nThe Adventures of Superfreak offers a child’s-eye view of the counterculture — not as nostalgia\, but as lived family reality\, with all its longing\, idealism\, danger\, and contradiction. In 1970\, Caleb’s family set out from Amsterdam to India in a VW bus: three young children traveling with disabled parents — his father using a wheelchair\, his mother living with undiagnosed bipolar disorder — on a 20\,000-mile journey through Europe\, North Africa\, the Middle East\, Afghanistan\, Pakistan\, and India. Along the way: psychedelics\, free love\, tense border crossings\, spiritual seekers\, and a childhood shaped as much by wonder as by instability. \nTold through the eyes of the child he was\, the memoir explores attachment and abandonment\, disability and independence\, family resilience\, spiritual seeking\, and the costs of adult freedom. To make sense of the upheaval around him\, Caleb becomes “Superfreak\,” a self-invented superhero trying to understand love\, danger\, and belonging inside an extraordinary family journey. \nThis Sacramento event offers a rare conversation between an author and a statewide disability leader whose life and work later intersected closely with the family at the heart of the book. Tony Sauer played wheelchair basketball and tennis with Caleb’s father\, Sam Dardick\, and later succeeded Sam as Executive Director of FREED Center for Independent Living\, when Sam was elected to the Nevada County Board of Supervisors. \nAlthough the memoir takes place before the Dardick family’s later involvement in the independent-living and disability-rights movements\, Caleb and Tony will explore how the experiences in the book foreshadow questions that would later shape Sam’s public work: access\, interdependence\, independence\, family support\, and the meaning of freedom. Tony’s former role as Director of the California Department of Rehabilitation gives the conversation a strong Sacramento connection\, linking the book’s intimate family story to California’s broader disability-rights and independent-living history. \nTony also brings a personal connection to the memoir. After reading an advance copy\, he wrote to Caleb that the book left him “with tears in my eyes\,” calling it a vivid and moving story of a journey that was “uniquely Dardick.” \nCaleb’s professional life has spanned public service\, nonprofit leadership\, environmental advocacy\, disability-related community work\, and local government. A graduate of UC Santa Cruz\, he is also a storyteller and leadership coach. He lives in Nevada City\, California\, with his wife. \nTony Sauer is the former Director of the California Department of Rehabilitation\, the Sacramento-based state agency serving Californians with disabilities. He was first appointed Deputy Director by Governor Gray Davis\, later promoted to Director by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger\, and reappointed by Governor Jerry Brown. Earlier in his career\, he served as Executive Director of FREED\, Center for Independent Living\, succeeding Caleb’s father\, Sam Dardick. A lifelong Nevada County resident\, Sauer is now retired and remains a respected voice in California’s disability community.
