SUMMARY:Intro to Intaglio (Etching)
DESCRIPTION:Why did artists like Francisco Goya\, Pablo Picasso\, Edgar Degas\, Käthe Kollwitz\, M. C. Escher\, and Rembrandt feel drawn to this rich and versatile process? \nEtching opens the door to endless creative possibilities. Its distinctive lines\, expressive range of mark-making\, and deeply tactile nature have fascinated artists for centuries. \nIn this one-day class\, we’ll dive into the essentials of etching. Students will learn how to prepare a copper plate with a hard ground and create their own line-based image. From there\, we’ll explore how to ink the plate and pull a finished print. By the end\, students will leave with both the skills and confidence to continue exploring this compelling medium. \nWHEN: November 8th\, 10-4pm \nWHERE: Myrtle Press inside Verge \nAbout the Instructors \nHoward Levine has been an active printmaker for the past fifty-seven years. Howard taught printmaking and drawing for Sierra College for almost twenty-five years. At Carriage House Press\, Grass Valley he had students engaged in all processes: intaglio\, relief\, litho and monotype for over 45 years. Howard has a M.A. from San Francisco State with an emphasis on printmaking\, mainly lithography. He also is a painter\, drawer and for-site artist. After dismantling his long time studio and gallery in Grass Valley\, CA. he and his wife moved to Sacramento and joined Myrtle Press. \nChanel Mace is a geometric abstract artist and printmaker whose work explores the intersection of organic sensation and structured space. Originally from Sacramento\, Chanel holds a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and studied at Central Saint Martins in London. She completed a yearlong postgraduate residency at The Wrocław School of Printmaking in Poland. She then spent eight years living and working in Australia. While in Sydney\, she was deeply involved in the local printmaking community\, working out of The Workshop Arts Centre in Willoughby and serving as acting Secretary of the North Sydney Printmakers Association. After a decade abroad\, she returned home to Sacramento\, where she now works out of Myrtle Press and is a member of the California Society of Printmakers.@chanelmaceart\, www.chanelmace.com

SUMMARY:NY Voices and Sacramento City College
DESCRIPTION:An extraordinary chapter in vocal jazz comes to Sacramento City College. For nearly four decades\, New York Voices has helped define the sound and possibility of contemporary vocal jazz. Their unmistakable harmonies\, extraordinary musicianship\, and commitment to ensemble singing have carried them from concert halls and jazz festivals worldwide to collaborations with some of the most celebrated artists and ensembles in music. \nNow\, as New York Voices brings this remarkable musical journey to a close\, Sacramento City College welcomes the internationally acclaimed ensemble for The Grand Finale\, a rare Sacramento appearance on their farewell tour. But their visit to SCC is about more than one evening on stage. \nThroughout the day\, members of New York Voices will work with students in a special residency devoted to vocal jazz\, musicianship\, artistry\, and the next generation of music makers. That evening\, the doors of the Performing Arts Center will open to our college and our community for an unforgettable celebration of a group whose influence has reached singers\, educators\, and audiences around the world. \nOne remarkable ensemble.\nOne final chapter.\nOne extraordinary night in Sacramento.

SUMMARY:Who Decides What Gets Built? The People and Power Behind Progress
DESCRIPTION:The future is being built all around us\, with billions invested in energy\, infrastructure\, and emerging technologies. But who’s driving these changes\, and how much power do everyday people have to shape what comes next? \nOn Election Day\, questions about power and representation feel especially relevant. But community influence doesn’t begin and end at the ballot box. \nFrom renewable energy projects to new transportation systems\, major investments are transforming our communities. Who decides what gets built\, where it goes\, and who benefits? \nJoin community engagement strategist Kidan Araya for an interactive exploration of how everyday people can influence these decisions. Through real-world stories and audience discussion\, we’ll explore why promising projects face resistance\, how local knowledge reveals overlooked problems\, and what changes when communities help shape decisions from the beginning. \nKidan Araya is a human geographer and community engagement strategist with more than a decade of experience working across public policy\, emerging technology\, and community engagement. From engaging communities in battleground states and supporting residents after oil spills to advising policymakers in Congress\, she has helped governments\, companies\, and international organizations develop solutions informed by the people they affect. \nToday\, she leads Pacific Africa\, an advisory practice focused on energy\, infrastructure\, and transportation. She also hosts Remembered Futures\, created Chalicity\, and brings people together through public discussion salons and Ethiopian coffee ceremonies.
