SUMMARY:Salsa the night away while supporting a heartfelt art project
DESCRIPTION:From Cultural Capital by Chris Macias: \nThe details: \n\nCasa de Español\, 1101 R St.\, Sacramento\n6 p.m.\, May 30 (Saturday)\n$10 in advance\, $15 at the door\n\nSince 2019\, Janine Mapurunga’s camera has been focused on a community of Spanish-speaking elders in Sacramento known as Manitos. She was inspired by the close relationship she shared with a grandmother who raised her in Brazil and is driven to share the stories of these senior Sacramentans. \nThrough years of documenting their oral histories and capturing their portraits\, Mapurunga is producing a bilingual photo book and short documentary film called “Bien Juntitos” (“Well Together”). Her goal is to have the book included in California’s school curriculum and the film screened internationally at festivals. \nThe process is nearly complete. All the photos are shot. The film is in the final stages of editing. Now\, she just needs the financial support to cross that finish line. That includes an online fundraiser and plans to establish relationships with larger funders and sponsors. \n“Fiesta Latina” on Saturday at Casa de Español is geared as a way to dance toward the goal. It’s a night of live music\, salsa dancing and community celebration with funds going toward “Bien Juntitos.” Clips from the film will be shown on a loop and her portrait of Maria Lopez\, a Manitos leader\, will be on display. \n“I struggle with the reality that elders\, who were once the most valued members of society throughout human history\, have become the most invisible and neglected\,” Mapurunga wrote in an email. “(My goal) is to share these stories as widely as possible in order to bring people together\, strengthen cultural understanding and inspire positive social change … We need to love and honor our elders while we can.” \nWant events like this sent directly to your email? Sign up for our weekly things to do newsletter here.

SUMMARY:The Smoldering Forest: A People Powered Cinema
DESCRIPTION:Meet Sita—space-larva\, seed\, sentient forest\, cyborg goddess\, biohacker\, shaman\, and daughter of the earth—who returns in a time of upheaval to re-imagine the stories that shape how we see and move through the world. \nRetold in the voice of its female protagonist Sita\, this retelling transforms the South Asian epic Ramayana into a series of eco-tales at the edge of the sixth extinction\, blending mythology\, ecology\, and science-fiction into an immersive cinematic experience. Originally imagined as a film\, the project had intended to engage human-powered energy solutions to produce the film. However\, since the most environmentally-friendly film is one that never gets made\, the project now exists as a performance of the cinematic. \nParticipants pass images and objects hand-to-hand\, experience a live soundtrack performed by Vaidya\, and take part in a guided visualization—co-creating the cinema together through imagination. By transforming the cinematic form\, the performance asks us to re-imagine the digital as handmade – of the digits – rather than the sensorially impoverished versions of the digital being pushed on us today. It is an invitation to remember that storytelling technologies are meant to bring us into community\, rather than isolating and dividing us. If we had used a projector\, we would all be facing the screen; instead\, now we are in a circle\, facing each other. \nThe work has been presented at venues including the Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts (New York City)\, the Asian Art Museum (San Francisco)\, and international festivals and conferences in India and beyond. It is being presented here as part of I-House Davis’ Roots & Routes series\, exploring diaspora\, identity\, and belonging.

SUMMARY:Gardens of the Hills
DESCRIPTION:Tour five private and one school garden in this fundraiser for Assistance League Sierra Foothill. Held the first weekend in June\, it is so much more than just gardens. Master Gardeners are on hand to answer questions and share expertise. Artisans showcase and sell their creations\, and food and beverages are available for guests to enjoy. Local artists work on projects during the tour\, engaging visitors in conversation about their creative process.
