SUMMARY:Gardens of the Hills
DESCRIPTION:Tour five private and one school garden in this fundraiser for Assistance League Sierra Foothill. Held the first weekend in June\, it is so much more than just gardens. Master Gardeners are on hand to answer questions and share expertise. Artisans showcase and sell their creations\, and food and beverages are available for guests to enjoy. Local artists work on projects during the tour\, engaging visitors in conversation about their creative process. A beloved tradition is the search for “Nutmeg” the squirrel — a stuffed squirrel hidden in each garden. Guests who find Nutmeg receive a stamp on their card and may submit it for a chance to win a prize. \nAll proceeds go to support six philanthropic programs in El Dorado County.

SUMMARY:Capital City Surf Clash III
DESCRIPTION:From Cultural Capital by Chris Macias: \nSacramento’s about to transform into “Surf City U.S.A.” The nearest ocean breaks might be down in the San Francisco Bay Area\, but bands will be riding a mighty musical wave at Café Colonial for “Capital City Surf Clash III.” The festival brings headliner 3LH from the Pacific Northwest with The Greasy Gills from Oakland\, along with local surf rockers The Me Gustas and DangerForce 5. \nSurf music has been a fixture of the River City for decades. In 1963\, the Beach Boys recorded a live album\, “Beach Boys Concert\,” at the Sacramento Memorial Auditorium. The surf rock scene of the 1960s was boosted locally by such bands as The Jaguars and The Avengers. That torch of surf music was carried through the years with The Tiki Men\, who were fixtures of the local indie-rock scene in the 1990s\, along with The Pyronauts and the in-your-face punk approach from ¡Las Pulgas! \nThis third installment of “Capital City Surf Clash” features a spectrum of surfy sounds. Though the genre is known for its primarily instrumental and reverb-soaked tracks\, 3LH is the rare surf band to use vocals. \n“In some circles that would be a bit taboo\,” The Me Gustas guitarist Onedin “Odi” Giraldo said in an Instagram direct message. “But I love how surf music has influenced other genres. Some folks don’t even know that it’s surf behind some of their favorite tunes!” \nMore details here. \nWant events like this sent directly to your email? SUMMARY:Dive into blue with a maestro of Sacramento arts
DESCRIPTION:From Cultural Capital by Chris Macias: \n\n\n\n\n\nThe details:  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLatino Center of Arts and Culture\, 2700 Front St.\, Sacramento\n6 p.m.\, June 12 opening reception (Friday)\nFree entry\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nStan Padilla is respected as one of the region’s most respected elders of the artistic community. At 80 years old\, this fount of creativity and wisdom shows no signs of slowing down. He’s spent the last few years traveling around the planet\, gathering inspiration from such lands as Italy\, Mexico and Egypt. In between\, Padilla’s had a busy year with 50th anniversary celebrations of the Royal Chicano Air Force\, the art collective in which he is a core member. \nNow\, a show that Padilla’s been conceptualizing for a decade comes to light with Friday’s opening of “Caminos Mundiales” (“Global Roads”) at the Latino Center of Arts and Culture. It’s a multimedia adventure through Padilla’s paintings\, stained glass works\, photography and videos. \n“This is a new offering and it’s different than people are going to expect\,” said Padilla\, in a call from his Colfax home. “It’s more like a travelogue. I’m bringing all the results of all my travels back to show in Sacramento.” \nThe show carries a theme of “In Search of the Color Blue.” Padilla said it represents his journeys to gather blue pigments from around the world\, such as Maya Blue and Egyptian Blue. Along with blue lighting and the color blue spotlighted in many of the works\, Padilla says the show will feel more like stepping into a temple than an art exhibition. \n“Blue has always been a very sacred color in all ancient cultures\,” said Padilla. “It’s always shown reverence and sacredness … It’s a sense of the presence of our lives. That’s what blue gives us.” \nAlong with the upcoming show\, Padilla is rebuilding after a fallen oak tree crushed his home studio during recent windstorms. Thankfully\, he didn’t lose much artwork. The community has also stepped up to help Padilla during this trying time. \n“I have to keep going\,” said Padilla. “I’m healthy and I’m thankful.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\nWant events like this sent directly to your email? Sign up for our weekly things to do newsletter here.

It all comes to an epic close on Saturday with the ninth annual Zine Megamall\, where Timeless Thrills will be filled with tables of fantastic zines. We’re especially looking forward to photo zines from the Nighted crew\, who are presenting the event\, along with Chip Parker and Claire Evans from Fresno. On the literary front\, definitely check what Sacramento author José Vadi is slanging\, including a zine dedicated to the post-hardcore icons Fugazi. \nWant events like this sent directly to your email? Sign up for our weekly things to do newsletter here.

SUMMARY:"Pocket Garden" – Solo Show by Ari Bird\, Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Opening reception for “Pocket Garden\,” a solo show by Oakland-based artist Ari Bird\, curated by Chase Dougherty. The exhibition runs June 13 to Aug. 23. It’s free and open to the public. \n“…Bird imagines an immersive world of forgotten items. Her large scale sculptures…actualize those things we accumulate only to lose out of our pockets or bags. Bird builds space and attention for the trinkets\, charms\, and detritus that overwhelm our drawers and fill our cabinets. Her sculptural transformations acknowledge the small tokens that we leave behind\, unintentional markers of our humanity and a reminder of our inherent human nature to collect.” \nMore details here.
