DESCRIPTION:Explore local archives and see historical treasures during the 16th annual Sacramento Archives Crawl at the California State Archives\, California State Library\, Sacramento Public Library\, and Center for Sacramento History. It’s free and no ticket is needed! \nDuring the Crawl\, archives and special collections libraries from all over the Sacramento region set up at the four host archives in Downtown Sacramento to display items from their collections. \nAs a Crawler\, you’ll tour among the four host sites and visit with archivists\, see local history exhibits and special presentations\, learn about historic preservation and research\, and go on behind-the-scenes tours the public doesn’t normally get to go on. Free shuttle transportation between sites is provided. \nHOW TO CRAWL\nThe Crawl takes place at the following archives in Downtown Sacramento:\n-California State Archives (1020 O Street)\n-California State Library (914 Capitol Mall)\n-Center for Sacramento History (551 Sequoia Pacific Blvd)\n-Sacramento Central Library (828 I Street) \nYou can start and end your Crawl at any site and go in any order you’d like. At any site\, you can pick up a Crawl passport (get it stamped at three of the four locations for a fun set of commemorative coasters). \nPARKING & SHUTTLE BUS\nThe Center for Sacramento History is the only host site with free parking in a dedicated lot and on the street. Other sites have paid street parking or paid lots. A free shuttle\, operated by Amador Stage Lines\, services three stops along the Crawl route approximately every 20 minutes. Stops are in front of the Center for Sacramento History\, at 9th and I next to the Public Library\, and at 10th and O to serve the State Library and State Archives. \nSPECIAL EVENTS AT EACH SITE\nCalifornia State Archives – TOURS & EXHIBIT\n** See a new exhibit on the development of San Francisco’s waterfront\, Shaping a Shoreline: Stories from the Waterfront. The exhibit features one-of-a-kind original records on display for one day only\, including maps\, photographs\, correspondence\, and employee records.\n** Enjoy behind the scenes tours offered on the hour between 11 am and 3 pm. Archives Crawl attendees can also attend the California Museum for free the day of Crawl! \nCalifornia State Library – TOURS\n** Check out the California State Library’s special 30-minute guided “Tiny Tours.” Guests can explore highlights such as Frank Van Sloan’s 1929 mural “The War Through the Ages\,” a display of photographs from Johnny Cash’s San Quentin and Folsom Prison concerts\, Maynard Dixon’s mural “Pageant of Traditions\,” sculptures by Edward Field Sanford Jr.\, the library lobby\, Gillis Hall\, and circulation room. \nCenter for Sacramento History – TOURS & EXHIBIT\n** Collections storage vault tours will be held every half hour starting at 10 am (last tour at 3:30 pm). This is the only day of the year CSH opens their storage vault to the public. Don’t miss it!\n** There will also be a new exhibit\, Employees Only: On the Job in Sacramento\, featuring photos that show folks hard at work\, from barbers and bartenders to rice farmers and sausage makers. DESCRIPTION:Join author Caleb Dardick for a vivid reading and conversation celebrating his forthcoming memoir\, The Adventures of Superfreak: My Childhood on the Hippie Trail (Running Wild Press\, September 21\, 2026). Caleb will be in conversation with Tony Sauer\, former Director of the California Department of Rehabilitation\, longtime disability leader\, and close family friend. \nThe Adventures of Superfreak offers a child’s-eye view of the counterculture — not as nostalgia\, but as lived family reality\, with all its longing\, idealism\, danger\, and contradiction. In 1970\, Caleb’s family set out from Amsterdam to India in a VW bus: three young children traveling with disabled parents — his father using a wheelchair\, his mother living with undiagnosed bipolar disorder — on a 20\,000-mile journey through Europe\, North Africa\, the Middle East\, Afghanistan\, Pakistan\, and India. Along the way: psychedelics\, free love\, tense border crossings\, spiritual seekers\, and a childhood shaped as much by wonder as by instability. \nTold through the eyes of the child he was\, the memoir explores attachment and abandonment\, disability and independence\, family resilience\, spiritual seeking\, and the costs of adult freedom. To make sense of the upheaval around him\, Caleb becomes “Superfreak\,” a self-invented superhero trying to understand love\, danger\, and belonging inside an extraordinary family journey. \nThis Sacramento event offers a rare conversation between an author and a statewide disability leader whose life and work later intersected closely with the family at the heart of the book. Tony Sauer played wheelchair basketball and tennis with Caleb’s father\, Sam Dardick\, and later succeeded Sam as Executive Director of FREED Center for Independent Living\, when Sam was elected to the Nevada County Board of Supervisors. \nAlthough the memoir takes place before the Dardick family’s later involvement in the independent-living and disability-rights movements\, Caleb and Tony will explore how the experiences in the book foreshadow questions that would later shape Sam’s public work: access\, interdependence\, independence\, family support\, and the meaning of freedom. Tony’s former role as Director of the California Department of Rehabilitation gives the conversation a strong Sacramento connection\, linking the book’s intimate family story to California’s broader disability-rights and independent-living history. \nTony also brings a personal connection to the memoir. After reading an advance copy\, he wrote to Caleb that the book left him “with tears in my eyes\,” calling it a vivid and moving story of a journey that was “uniquely Dardick.” \nCaleb’s professional life has spanned public service\, nonprofit leadership\, environmental advocacy\, disability-related community work\, and local government. A graduate of UC Santa Cruz\, he is also a storyteller and leadership coach. He lives in Nevada City\, California\, with his wife. \nTony Sauer is the former Director of the California Department of Rehabilitation\, the Sacramento-based state agency serving Californians with disabilities. He was first appointed Deputy Director by Governor Gray Davis\, later promoted to Director by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger\, and reappointed by Governor Jerry Brown. Earlier in his career\, he served as Executive Director of FREED\, Center for Independent Living\, succeeding Caleb’s father\, Sam Dardick. A lifelong Nevada County resident\, Sauer is now retired and remains a respected voice in California’s disability community.

Join us for our 8th annual Dignity Health Dirty Kid Obstacle Race at the Sacramento Adventure Playground on Saturday and Sunday\, October 10-11 from 10AM-11AM each day. Youth and adult participants of all ages (4 and up) will race in a small endurance course with obstacles\, including MUD! \nWaves of kids 4–15—and even some adults—will be challenged by a demanding course with numerous physical obstacles—climbing over walls\, jumping hay bales\, crawling through a mud pit and through tubes\, navigating balance beams\, and dragging tires. Course length\, obstacles\, and difficulty adjust with age. The race is both fun and an important lesson in perseverance! \nThis event serves as a fundraiser for the Sacramento Adventure Playground\, with all proceeds going toward supporting the Adventure Playground\, a Fairytale Town-powered initiative. Located at Maple Neighborhood Center\, the Adventure Playground is an after-school youth development program that enables youth ages 6 to 15 to engage in supervised play activities free of charge.

Following\, we’ll talk with a panel of Bay Area leaders to continue the conversation about women thriving in a competitive world. \nBrandi Chastain \nBrandi Chastain is an iconic American athlete\, a retired soccer player\, two-time Olympic gold-medalist\, broadcaster and two-time FIFA Women’s World Cup champion. California-born Chastain has had a fantastic career\, playing professionally for several major teams\, including Shiroki FC in the Japan Women’s Football League\, the San Jose CyberRays of the Women’s United Soccer Association\, FC Gold Pride of Women’s Professional Soccer\, and California Storm of Women’s Premier Soccer League. Between the 1988 and 2004\, Chastain played for the U.S. Women’s National Team; it was during this time that the squad won two Olympic gold medals and two World Cups. \nIn sports broadcasting\, Chastain has worked as a commentator for soccer matches both with NBC Sports during the 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics and with ABC/ESPN covering Major League Soccer and the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup. A champion of girls’ health\, Chastain co-founded the Bay Area Women’s Sports Initiative in 2005 with a mission to create programs and partnerships through which women athletes bring health\, hope\, and wholeness to the community. She is the author of the 2005 book\, “It’s Not About the Bra: Play Hard\, Play Fair\, and Put the Fun Back Into Competitive Sports.” \nCandace Parker \nCandace Parker has already solidified herself as one of the most influential athletes of this generation. After being selected as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2008 WNBA Draft by the Los Angeles Sparks\, following a champion career at Tennessee\, Parker went on to become the first player to earn WNBA MVP and Rookie of the Year honors in the same season. Over the course of her illustrious career\, Parker won three WNBA championship titles\, and took home two Olympic gold medals\, helping redefine versatility and excellence in women’s basketball. \nIn 2026\, she was named a headlining inductee into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Off the court\, first and foremost\, she is a wife\, mother of three children and three dogs. Since retired\, she serves as an author\, public speaker\, activist\, entrepreneur\, and studio broadcaster for men’s and women’s basketball.
