SUMMARY:Wisdom of Women Symposium – Unstoppable: Power\, Investment & the Future of Women’s Professional Sports
DESCRIPTION:A Conversation with Brandi Chastain & Candace Parker\nJoin us for a double-gold day featuring an exclusive conversation with two Olympics gold medalists: soccer legend Brandi Chastain and basketball phenom Candace Parker. They will share their wins and challenges – how they have cultivated success as industry leaders\, authors and champions for women in all aspects of life. Following\, we’ll talk with a panel of Bay Area leaders to continue the conversation about women thriving in a competitive world. \nBrandi Chastain \nBrandi Chastain is an iconic American athlete\, a retired soccer player\, two-time Olympic gold-medalist\, broadcaster and two-time FIFA Women’s World Cup champion. California-born Chastain has had a fantastic career\, playing professionally for several major teams\, including Shiroki FC in the Japan Women’s Football League\, the San Jose CyberRays of the Women’s United Soccer Association\, FC Gold Pride of Women’s Professional Soccer\, and California Storm of Women’s Premier Soccer League. Between the 1988 and 2004\, Chastain played for the U.S. Women’s National Team; it was during this time that the squad won two Olympic gold medals and two World Cups. \nIn sports broadcasting\, Chastain has worked as a commentator for soccer matches both with NBC Sports during the 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics and with ABC/ESPN covering Major League Soccer and the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup. A champion of girls’ health\, Chastain co-founded the Bay Area Women’s Sports Initiative in 2005 with a mission to create programs and partnerships through which women athletes bring health\, hope\, and wholeness to the community. She is the author of the 2005 book\, “It’s Not About the Bra: Play Hard\, Play Fair\, and Put the Fun Back Into Competitive Sports.” \nCandace Parker \nCandace Parker has already solidified herself as one of the most influential athletes of this generation. After being selected as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2008 WNBA Draft by the Los Angeles Sparks\, following a champion career at Tennessee\, Parker went on to become the first player to earn WNBA MVP and Rookie of the Year honors in the same season. Over the course of her illustrious career\, Parker won three WNBA championship titles\, and took home two Olympic gold medals\, helping redefine versatility and excellence in women’s basketball. \nIn 2026\, she was named a headlining inductee into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Off the court\, first and foremost\, she is a wife\, mother of three children and three dogs. Since retired\, she serves as an author\, public speaker\, activist\, entrepreneur\, and studio broadcaster for men’s and women’s basketball. Her recent book\, “The Can-Do Mindset: How to Cultivate Resilience\, Follow Your Heart\, and Fight for Your Passion” breaks down her recipe for success which has helped her success on and off the court. \nAlso Speaking:\nRyann Greenberg\, vice president of guest experience and venue operations\, Bay FC \nRyann Greenberg is vice president of guest experience and venue operations at Bay FC\, responsible for delivering world-class experience for players\, fans\, and partners across the club’s operations. She leads match day operations and guest experience for the club and as a member of the club’s executive leadership team has helped Bay FC quickly establish itself as a commercial powerhouse by leading the NWSL in merchandise sales and finishing in the top five for average home attendance. Building on that business momentum\, the club shattered records by drawing a sellout crowd of 40\,091 fans to Oracle Park in their second season\, establishing the highest single-game attendance record in U.S. women’s professional sports league history. \nJess Smith\, president\, Golden State Valkyries \nJess Smith began her first season as president of the Golden State Valkyries ahead of the team’s inaugural 2025 season. Smith\, who has over 18 years of experience in professional sports\, oversees all WNBA business operations. Under Smith’s leadership\, the Valkyries have built a winning culture on and off the court. During their inaugural season\, the Valkyries set all-time WNBA records for both average attendance (18\,064) and total attendance (397\,408)\, selling out all 22 regular-season home games. \nHeather Vaughan\, president\, MLV NorCal \nHeather Vaughan is President of MLV NorCal\, Northern California’s Major League Volleyball franchise\, where she is leading the launch of one of the newest professional women’s sports teams in the country. A passionate brand builder with more than 25 years in professional sports\, entertainment\, and live events\, she previously held leadership roles with Sharks Sports & Entertainment\, the Pac-12 Conference\, and Sacramento Kings. An award-winning marketer and university instructor\, Heather is dedicated to uniting communities through sports and advancing women’s professional athletics. \nModerator: \nPamela Wu ’95\, director of news and media relations\, UC Davis Health \nPamela Wu’s career spans the fields of broadcast journalism\, public relations\, and communications training.

SUMMARY:MIDTOWN RECORD SWAP
DESCRIPTION:Sacramento..I do believe we’ve just come out of our #firstfalsefall. Which can only mean one thing. It’s your last chance to catch your record collection up and fill your #musicalpantry for the year.. \nAt the MIDTOWN RECORD SWAP! \nWe are back for the final Swap of the year and #somepeoplearesaying we saved the best for last. We have a fresh mix of your favorite local independent record sellers along with new faces coming from out of town and out of state! But you already know how we do. \nWe keep it nice!\nThe CLARA lets us dial in the thermostat and sound system..all for your comfort. We intentionally do not overcrowd the space. Lots of room and time to dig without anybody breathing down your neck. Not to mention\, FREE ONSITE PARKING! \nWe keep it fun!\nNo early bird access. No cost to dig. No greedy elbows to duck. No bitter record hoarders. We’ve got giveaways and all kinds of fun throughout the day. \nWe keep it fresh!\nNo déjà vu. No “same old”. We work hard to balance your favorite sellers with new sellers we know you’ll love. THIS IS IMPORTANT. There’s one thing you’ll never see us doing: posting to look for vendors. When we see events doing that\, well..you know what it means. WE KNOW WHO WE WANT TO INVITE to sell…um..the people we want to buy from! The people who always have something special. The people YOU want to buy from. And the people we can’t wait for you to meet. \nOf course\, the CLARA and our event are accessible to all. My mom spent much of her life in a wheelchair and I’ve experienced many ways the limitations of access afforded to people with disabilities can affect us all. We are committed to ensuring access to all and enjoy having more of you joining us at each Swap. \nNothing has made us more proud than seeing the ever-growing number of young\, diverse and passionate music lovers making up more and more of our crowds. \nMIDTOWN RECORD SWAP\nSATURDAY OCTOBER 3RD\n10 AM – 3 PM\nCLARA\n24th & N\nFREE ONSITE PARKING\nNew & Used Records\, Tapes & CDs\nSeasons Coffee onsite!

SUMMARY:NOBLE: A Portrait Series
DESCRIPTION:From Cultural Capital by Chris Macias: \nLet’s close the camera phone for now and go back when photography required a wealth of patience and bit of magic in the darkroom. Miguel Gutierrez Jr. knows both worlds as a longtime photojournalist who can produce hundreds of images in minutes. He also pursues an artistic side that specializes in platinum-palladium printing. It’s a process that dates to the days of Alexander Graham Bell in the late 1800s with a meticulous wet chemistry process. \nFor the Sacramento-based photographer\, this method requires up to an hour and much trial-and-error to develop a single print. Take the time and the results are often stunning\, with a warm\, ethereal quality that works especially well for portraits. Now\, it’s time to view Gutierrez’s impeccable photos at NOBLE\, an exhibit of his work that runs Friday through Nov. 12 at The Gallery at 48 Natoma in Folsom. \nNOBLE’s portraits depict members of the Sacramento members cultural community\, including the botanist/musician Liz Lopez and muralist Jose Di Gregorio. The exhibit was months in the making\, from printing the photos to framing them from the show. \n“We walk around with phones in our pockets containing hundreds\, if not thousands of photographs\,” Gutierrez wrote in an email. “With this process\, I’m forced to work with a single image for an indeterminate amount of time and turn it into a physical object. The result is something handmade\, with imperfections\, texture and life.” \nYou can hear more about Gutierrez’s methods and inspirations at an artist reception on Oct. 2. Take time to sink into this imagery and appreciate its place in a world of instant gratification. \n“The process tests my skills as a photographer because it forces me to slow down and be much more intentional\,” Gutierrez wrote. “A lot more can go wrong\, but that’s also part of what I enjoy about the process. No two prints are ever the same.” \nWant events like this sent directly to your inbox? Sign up for Abridged by PBS KVIE’s weekly things to do newsletter here.

SUMMARY:Sacramento Greek Festival
DESCRIPTION:Since 1963\, the treasured community event has shared the culture of Greece through live entertainment\, dancing and a delicious menu of authentic cuisine and wine.\nWhat started as a small parish afternoon gathering in 1963 has grown into one of the region’s most beloved cultural traditions — the Sacramento Greek Festival — three days of authentic Greek food\, wine\, live music\, dance\, and oikogeneia (family). This October 2nd-4th\, for the 63rd year\, the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church will welcome generations of Sacramentans to the church grounds on Alhambra to embrace the traditions we love.\nThe Greek Festival kicks off with “Friday Funday” $3 admission on October 2nd from 11am to 3pm.\nAn important update: this year\, the Sacramento Greek Festival will be cashless.\nAnnunciation food booths\, the Pandepoleon\, and Festival Souvenirs Booth will only accept credit card\, debit card\, and contactless payment (Apple pay\, Google pay\, Samsung pay). The Annunciation Bookstore and all other third-party vendors in “The Agora” may take cash\, card\, or contactless payment at their discretion. \nGreek Dancers will take the stage throughout the weekend. Festival attendees dance the nights away to traditional live Greek music from Mythos Band\, and DJ Chris Perris spinning the latest hits from the Greek Islands.\nGuests will enjoy indoor and outdoor dining experiences on the spacious church grounds with tents for shade and plenty of seating.
