SUMMARY:Intro to Intaglio (Etching)
DESCRIPTION:Why did artists like Francisco Goya\, Pablo Picasso\, Edgar Degas\, Käthe Kollwitz\, M. C. Escher\, and Rembrandt feel drawn to this rich and versatile process? \nEtching opens the door to endless creative possibilities. Its distinctive lines\, expressive range of mark-making\, and deeply tactile nature have fascinated artists for centuries. \nIn this one-day class\, we’ll dive into the essentials of etching. Students will learn how to prepare a copper plate with a hard ground and create their own line-based image. From there\, we’ll explore how to ink the plate and pull a finished print. By the end\, students will leave with both the skills and confidence to continue exploring this compelling medium. \nWHEN: November 8th\, 10-4pm \nWHERE: Myrtle Press inside Verge \nAbout the Instructors \nHoward Levine has been an active printmaker for the past fifty-seven years. Howard taught printmaking and drawing for Sierra College for almost twenty-five years. At Carriage House Press\, Grass Valley he had students engaged in all processes: intaglio\, relief\, litho and monotype for over 45 years. Howard has a M.A. from San Francisco State with an emphasis on printmaking\, mainly lithography. He also is a painter\, drawer and for-site artist. After dismantling his long time studio and gallery in Grass Valley\, CA. he and his wife moved to Sacramento and joined Myrtle Press. \nChanel Mace is a geometric abstract artist and printmaker whose work explores the intersection of organic sensation and structured space. Originally from Sacramento\, Chanel holds a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and studied at Central Saint Martins in London. She completed a yearlong postgraduate residency at The Wrocław School of Printmaking in Poland. She then spent eight years living and working in Australia. While in Sydney\, she was deeply involved in the local printmaking community\, working out of The Workshop Arts Centre in Willoughby and serving as acting Secretary of the North Sydney Printmakers Association. After a decade abroad\, she returned home to Sacramento\, where she now works out of Myrtle Press and is a member of the California Society of Printmakers.@chanelmaceart\, www.chanelmace.com

SUMMARY:Teen Drypoint Tetra Pak Printmaking Workshop
DESCRIPTION:In this class\, we will explore a playful approach to dry-point printmaking using Tetra Pak as our printing plates. Tetra Pak is a recyclable material commonly found in broth\, pre mixed protein drinks as well as shelf stable products. This material is great for its price point and eco friendly way to create a print. Like other drypoint printing\, there is a limited run of prints you can get from each Tetra Pak. This is perfect for beginners as well as seasoned printmakers who want to try something new. Using drypoint needles\, students will gently create marks in the foil surface before inking\, wiping\, and running their plates through the press to create original prints. Each participant will be provided multiple Tetra Pak to create several prints they can take home. Please come with an image or simple design idea already in mind. Tetra Pak sizes may vary depending on the carton you choose — think single-serve protein drinks\, broth cartons\, and similar packaging. \nNote: Sharp tools will be used during this class. When registering your teen\, we ask that you discuss the importance of tool safety and the proper handling of sharp tools to help ensure a safe learning environment for all participants. \nWHEN: Monday Dec 21st \nTIME: 1-5pm \nWHERE: Myrtle Press inside Verge Center for the Arts \nAGE: Must be enrolled or High School age – Age 14-18 years old \nAbout the Instructor \nKelly’s printmaking practice is rooted in experimentation\, often blending layered surfaces\, organic forms\, and atmospheric compositions to create work that feels both deeply personal and universally symbolic. Drawn to the tactile nature of the process\, she embraces the imperfections and unexpected outcomes inherent in printmaking\, allowing each piece to evolve through multiple stages of carving\, inking\, pressing\, and reworking. Her work reflects an ongoing fascination with movement\, erosion\, memory\, and renewal\, all qualities that naturally emerge through the layered language of print.
