One year ago this week, Abridged by PBS KVIE launched with a pledge: to serve the Sacramento region as the news and information source this community deserves.
Amid steep declines in local news coverage, we sought to fill a widening gap and to tell the stories that others were ignoring. We spent a year listening to you before we launched, and the message was clear: you wanted authentic storytelling about the people, places and issues defining life in this place we call home. And you wanted it without the opinion and noise that has begun to dominate the information thrown our way every day.

Since going live on Sept. 16, 2025, our team has published more than 1,000 stories
alongside thousands of photographs and videos capturing life in the Sacramento region. Our newsletters have been sent to individual inboxes more than 14 million times, connecting people with stories about our region’s food and arts scenes, how our schools are serving our children and how our communities continue to evolve. We’ve met with hundreds of you at farmers’ markets, listening sessions and community events where we’ve gathered together to talk about the region’s biggest challenges.
We’ve dug deep to tell you what’s behind the delays on Highway 50, why our school districts are struggling and how decisions by our elected leaders are directly affecting lives across the four-county region. Our journalism has been recognized across the state and nation; earlier this year, we won 16 California Journalism Awards — including six first-place recognitions — and were accepted as full members into the prestigious Institute for Nonprofit News.
We recently added journalists covering the state Capitol and serving Placer County. We’ll add two more journalists in the weeks ahead as we continue to build one of the largest newsrooms in the Sacramento region — a remarkable pace of growth as newsrooms across the country lay off journalists, leaving entire communities without reliable news and information.
Everything we provide to this community is free of charge and our growth is made possible only by our generous supporters. Nearly 900 of you have already donated to support local journalism. That includes the incredible generosity of nearly 40 Founding Supporters, each of whom has committed at least $10,000 in the past year.
That support is incredibly encouraging, and the biggest test facing us now is ensuring our growth continues and that we can continue serving you for years to come. As we begin our second year, we are guided by serving you. Our recent survey of more than 400 readers told us that we are building trust with this community. We also received a lot of feedback on what we’ve done well and what we can improve.
