The Abridged version:
- The Sacramento Public Library and Abridged by PBS KVIE have partnered on “Tell me more,” a community storytelling project. Starting in November, you’ll see the initiative at branches across the county.
- More Perfect and the Urban Libraries Council selected the Sacramento Public Library, with support of Abridged, for a competitive national grant.
- The project will take several shapes, all in service of one clear mission: to uplift the untold stories of our communities. Patrons will have the chance to interact with library and newsroom staff at their local branches to engage in meaningful conversation around the challenges and joys of life in the Sacramento region.
Cracking open a well-loved library book elicits a nostalgic feeling not far from that of a television buzzing to life on a Saturday morning.
Curiosity overtakes a child eager to learn — ready to soak in a story that expands their mind. This is the same feeling we chase into adulthood, longing to connect with worlds beyond our own, whether far away or a stone’s throw from home.
It feels natural, then, that a local PBS station would team up with its public library. The two share a core value: commitment to education, access and community connection.
Abridged by PBS KVIE is excited to announce it has partnered with the Sacramento Public Library on “Tell me more,” a collaborative storytelling project based at library branches across the county.
With the support of Abridged, the library received a competitive national grant from More Perfect and the Urban Libraries Council. The goal is to create a model for collaboration between local newsrooms and libraries by creating access and trust in reliable local information, uplifting community voices and forging pathways for civic engagement.
“Together, we hope to amplify voices and perspectives that have too often been overlooked by traditional media and help more of our community see their experiences reflected and heard,” the library shared in its project announcement.
Sign Up for the Morning Newsletter
The Abridged morning newsletter lands in your inbox every weekday morning with the latest news from the Sacramento region.
Starting the second week of November, community members visiting select library branches will find engaging prompts, encouraging them to participate in meaningful conversation around the challenges and joys of life in the Sacramento region.
We want to ensure your voice is present in the telling of our region’s story. Feedback will be shared with Abridged editors and reporters, whom you’ll also have a chance to meet at library branches where they will host listening sessions and other activities.
Simply grab a postcard at a participating branch and answer any of the following:
What story about your community should be shared?
What keeps you up at night?
Who is someone everyone should know about?
What do you wonder about life in Sacramento?
Then, look for a library or Abridged staff member wearing a “tell me more” button. They’ll be more than happy to chat.
