The Abridged version:

  • Broadway Donuts in Sacramento will stay open, with staff at the shop taking over.
  • Owner Josan Kim So had originally announced plans to close this month, ending a 37-year run for the store, after suffering a stroke in August.

Broadway Donuts will keep its doors open in Sacramento after all, according to staff members.

The beloved local bakery was set to close its doors Dec. 12, ending a 37-year run in Sacramento. Owner Josan Kim So said he made the decision after suffering a stroke in August and needing a change in lifestyle to tend to his health.

“I had a pretty long three months of thinking (about) what I’m going to do with my life,” Kim So told Abridged last week. “I know it feels pretty sad closing the shop. The community supported us through all these years.”

But since then, a longtime member of staff has offered to take over and keep Broadway Donuts running, store employee Melody Moua confirmed to Abridged.

Kim So was the second-generation owner of Broadway Donuts. His parents, Telline So and Tong Yin, came to California after surviving the Khmer Rouge and in 1988, opened what was then called Baker Ben’s.
