We’ve reached the peak of the Sacramento region’s outdoor event and festival season, but it’s not quite done.
This week, you’ll find a variety of concerts around the area, both outdoors and in, plus film picks and a food event with a budget-friendly price.
Let’s get to it.
Highlight of the week
The (free) kind of music they play at an international food fest
The details:
- Golden 1 Live Music Stage at Terra Madre Americas, 14th and I streets
- Sept. 27 and Sept. 28, music starts at noon
- Free
One of the year’s biggest local festivals is going down right now. The global slow food movement has descended on downtown Sacramento for Terra Madre Americas, with a wide range of activities based in and around SAFE Credit Union Convention Center. Check the coverage from Benjy Egel and his City of Treats newsletter for insights and the impact it’s having locally.
Music heads should note that free outdoor concerts are part of Terra Madre Americas. That includes DJs, local and national acts, along with headlining sets from alt-rock favorites Spoon and The War on Drugs this Saturday. Big Head Todd and The Monsters close out the music offerings on Sunday afternoon as Terra Madre Americas winds down.

More events ahead
Now, let’s check what other festivals and events are happening this week. Plus, some indoor options.
Feel the Island Vibes at Holo Holo Music Festival
The details:
- Heart Health Park at Cal Expo, 1600 Exposition Blvd., Sacramento
- 1 p.m. Sept. 27; 2 p.m. Sept. 28
- $238 for two-day general admission; $158 single day tickets. Click here for information on VIP options and kids’ passes. (Prices subject to change).
A trip to Hawaii sure sounds good about now, especially as cooler weather approaches. Even if you’re going to be stuck on the mainland this weekend, you can get a taste of tropical paradise at the Holo Holo Music Festival on Saturday and Sunday at Cal Expo’s Heart Health Park. In Hawaiian, “Holo Holo” translates to “go for a walk, ride or sail.” In this case, you can cruise between the sounds of roots reggae from Katchafire, the Grammy-nominated Kimié Miner, the reggae favorite J Boog and many more.
Fill up on local foods at ‘A Taste of Davis & Yolo’
The details:
- Davis Odd Fellows Lodge, 415 2nd St., Davis
- 6 to 8 p.m., Sept. 28
- $20 advance, $25 at door
Terra Madre won’t be the only spot to celebrate local foods this weekend. A Taste of Davis & Yolo will be held on Sunday at Davis Odd Fellows Lodge. Formerly known as “A Taste of Davis,” this event features a who’s who of Yolo-based food and drink purveyors. This year, samples can be savored from the likes of Maya’s Authentic Mexican Food, Dunloe Brewing, Ludy’s BBQ, Bandolio Olive Oil and about a dozen others. Even more appetizing, a pre-sale ticket is just $20.
Celebrate Camellia Symphony Orchestra’s new season at McClatchy High School
- C.K. McClatchy High School, 3066 Freeport Blvd., Sacramento
- 7:30 p.m., Sept. 27. Pre-concert talk starts at 6:45 p.m.
- $43.89 adults; $38.59 ages 65+ and active military; $26.93 students; $14.21 ages 12 and under.
Think of these musicians as the “weekend warriors” of classical music. The Camellia Symphony Orchestra is comprised of local musicians who hail from many walks of life, including government workers, educators and doctors. But they are all passionate about music and performing works from great composers. Help the orchestra kick off its 63rd season on Saturday at C.K. McClatchy High School in a program titled “New World Visions,” which includes works by Barber, Florence Price and Dvořák’s enduring Symphony No. 9 “From the New World.”
Get cozy with your crew at McClatchy Park’s movie night
The details:
- McClatchy Park, 3500 5th Ave., Sacramento
- 7 p.m., Sept. 26
- Free
Grab some blankets, lawn chairs and view a family-friendly movie under the stars (as long as the clouds cooperate). “Paddington in Peru” is the featured attraction at “Movie Night in the Park,” which will be held in McClatchy Park. Bonus: Free popcorn and hot dogs!
Kick it with Jean-Claude Van Damme at Dreamland Cinema
The details:
- The Dreamland Cinema at the Thistle Dew Dessert Theatre, 1901 P St., Sacramento
- 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., Sept. 27
- $17.93
For those who crave a cinematic experience beyond the mega-plex movie house, Dreamland Cinema is a go-to spot for arthouse and cult films in Sacramento. Look for it at the Thistle Dew Dessert Theatre in midtown (bonus OG Sacramento points if you remember when this spot was Cambiré Café in the 1990s). This Saturday will bring back days of Blockbuster gone by with a “Van Dammage Double Feature” that includes “Sudden Death” and “Street Fighter” screened on VHS. And, you don’t have to worry about late fees or rewinding the tape.
