The Abridged version:
- California voters overwhelmingly approved Proposition 50, the California ballot measure to redraw congressional district lines in California to favor Democrats in at least five of the state’s 52 districts.
- Gov. Gavin Newsom and legislative Democrats placed the measure on the ballot to counter Republican-led gerrymandering efforts in Texas and other states.
- It will takes weeks to count all the votes, but the initial returns show a majority of voters in the Sacramento region sided with Newsom’s measure.
California voters overwhelmingly approved Proposition 50, the California ballot measure to redraw congressional district lines in California to favor Democrats in at least five of the state’s 52 districts.
A majority of voters in the four-county Sacramento region backed the measure, though the results illustrated sharp, longstanding political divides, according to an Abridged analysis of early election returns.
About 56% of the Sacramento region’s voters cast “Yes” ballots. Precincts around Land Park, Oak Park, Midtown Sacramento and Davis showed the strongest support for the measure, with more than 85% of voters casting “Yes” ballots, according to returns as of 9 p.m. Tuesday.
A majority of voters in Placer and El Dorado counties, along with voters in several rural precincts, cast “No” ballots, early returns showed.
This Abridged analysis shows how the early vote tally went across the region — by precinct and ZIP code — according to reports from county election departments. El Dorado and Placer counties did not provide access to the vote totals by precinct, so only countywide totals are available there.
In the maps below, blue areas show precincts and ZIP code areas that favored Proposition 50. Red areas opposed it. Users can zoom in to the maps and hover over the ZIP codes or precincts to see more information about the area and the exact count as of 9 p.m. Tuesday. El Dorado and Placer areas show countywide totals. Please allow maps a moment to load.
Results by precinct
Results by ZIP code
This map shows the results by ZIP code for Sacramento and Yolo counties. At the ZIP code level, the strongest support for the proposition came in 95817 (North Oak Park), 95616 (Davis) and 95814 (Downtown Sacramento), the Abridged analysis found.
Note: Zip Code results are aggregated from precinct results. They are approximate because precinct boundaries can cross ZIP code lines. Urban ZIP code results are more reliable than rural ZIP code results.
After the statewide outcome was projected by the Associated Press Tuesday night, Democratic Rep. Ami Bera changed his campaign website to announce that he would seek re-election in 2026 in the newly configured Congressional District 3, now represented by Republican Rep. Kevin Kiley. Kiley’s campaign released a video saying the Rocklin incumbent would seek re-election.
