More than 5,000 people protested at the state Capitol on Saturday as part of a nationwide “No Kings” effort to oppose President Donald Trump’s policies, according to a preliminary estimate by organizers.

Among those who spoke to the crowd were “elected officials, veterans, business people, educators and labor leaders,” said organizer Ellen Chapman. She described the effort as a “peaceful show of unity and strength” against Trump’s “abuse of power.”

The morning began with a march of about 400 people from Sutter’s Fort State Historic Park to downtown, where they joined thousands more protesters at the west steps of the Capitol and surrounding streets.

“There is a lot of interest in Sacramento for people to get out in the streets and show their opposition to the current administration,” said Susan Brown, who helped organize Saturday’s march.

The protest was part of a nationwide effort, with similar rallies scheduled in 2,500 cities nationwide, including Davis, Elk Grove, Folsom and Roseville.
