The Abridged version:

  • Tre Pazzi Trattoria will close Dec. 31 after nearly 17 years by Auburn’s Central Square.
  • The Italian restaurant’s landlord declined to renew its lease in the historic Kreuzberger Building, according to a Facebook post Monday.
  • Gary Capps has owned Tre Pazzi since its founding in 2010.

Tre Pazzi Trattoria will close at the end of 2026, finishing out nearly 17 years in Downtown Auburn.

The longtime Italian restaurant was informed that its lease at 928 Lincoln Way would not be renewed, operators announced in a Facebook post Monday. Its last day will be Dec. 31.

“As you can imagine, this is incredibly heartbreaking for all of us. Auburn isn’t just where we have worked for the past 17 years. It’s the community that has supported us, welcomed us into your lives, celebrated with us, and allowed us to be a small part of your stories,” the Facebook post read.

“So many of you have become familiar faces, loyal customers, friends, and even family. We have watched your children grow up, shared in your special moments, and had the honor of serving generations of families. That is something we will never take for granted.”

Named for the Tuscan nobles who conspired to overthrow members of the Medici family in 1478, Tre Pazzi opened in 2010 in Auburn’s historic Kreuzberger Building. It was founded by Gary Capps and the late Jim Bril, then the owner of Monkey Cat Restaurant & Bar, close to the town’s Central Square.

Capps remained the owner as the brick-walled restaurant became an Auburn favorite for pasta, pizza and meaty mains, offering a gluten-free menu as time went on. Tre Pazzi’s menu identifies dishes by their Italian region of origin when known — ricotta-stuffed ravioli in nonna sauce from Umbria, for example, or Tuscan lamb over cannellini bean marinara with polenta.
