The Abridged version:

  • A majority of voters opposed the ballot measure that would approve or deny the Village Farms housing development. But there are more ballots left to count.
  • This Abridged by PBS KVIE map shows how voters in different pockets of Davis leaned on the issue, according to early returns released Election Night.
  • Voters in precincts closest to UC Davis favored the project, while those on the eastern side of the city opposed it.

Early returns showed Measure V, which asked voters to approve or deny a contentious housing development called Village Farms, failing by a slim margin in Davis.

About 53% of voters rejected the measure compared to about 47% who opposed it, according to returns as of 11 p.m. Tuesday.

The voting pattern signaled a clear geographical split: A majority of voters living in precincts closest to UC Davis backed the measure, while voters in the eastern half of the city opposed it.

In the maps below, blue areas show precincts where most voters rejected the measure. Green areas show precincts where most voters supported it. Users can hover over the precincts to see more information about the area and the exact count as of 11 p.m. Tuesday.

Approving the Village Farms development would greenlight up to 1,800 residential units in an area west of the Wildhorse neighborhood. Those against the project have raised concerns about the site’s proximity to the old Davis landfill, increased traffic and what they have called an inadequate affordable housing plan.
