Hey, it’s Daniel! Let’s dive in.
Baseball has been a touchpoint in my life for about as long as I can remember, so much so that I’ve come to associate certain senses with the game. In the spring, it’s the smell of fresh cut grass, but as summer approaches and days lengthen, it’s the evening warmth that sticks around long after the sun has dipped below the horizon.
Lately, baseball has been on my mind, and I’m not alone.
Tomorrow, local leaders are expected make an announcement about plans to court a potential MLB expansion team. During her “state of the city” address last week, the mayor of West Sacramento touted the city’s standing as the “baseball side of the river” while alluding to tomorrow’s announcement.
Also this week, we have an update on a Yolo County water rights battle between state and local agencies that has reached a settlement.
And the Yolo County Board of Supervisors has opened up the recruitment process to fill the district attorney position after Jeff Reisig retired at the beginning of the month.
We’ve teamed up with Yolo Local, a civic media initiative of Davis Media Access, to bring you this weekly newsletter. Here’s what you need to know today:

DISPATCHES FROM THE FARM
Agriculture is a central part of life in Yolo County, so I’ll be checking in each week with a farmer, rancher or other industry player for the latest ag updates. What are the people who help produce our food thinking about?
This week, the Yolo County Agricultural Commissioner Humberto Izquierdo sent out a notice to residents asking them to keep an eye on grapes they may have bought from local Costco stores. Some grapes from the big box store are carrying invasive glassy-winged sharpshooters, which can be deadly to local grape and ornamental plants.
- Izquierdo is asking anyone who bought grapes from Costco beginning April 21 to report pests to the county’s agricultural office.
HEARING FROM YOU
The best way to learn about a place is to listen to the people who know and love it. Each week, we’ll feature a quote or tip from a community member that captures a slice of life in our county. Write to me with something interesting or ask a question about Yolo County!
Speaking of grapes, last week, we heard from the California State Fair that two Yolo County wineries took home awards in their 2026 Commercial Wine Competition. The competition includes wines that are grown and produced in state, with hundreds of entrants.
Silt Wine Company in Clarksburg won the Golden State Winery of the Year and Great Bear Vineyards in Davis won in the Best Micro Winery Other section.
UPCOMING MEETINGS & EVENTS
It can be hard to keep up with local government and community events, so we’ll continuously feature a few below. Have something you think we should highlight? Email me.

- The UC Davis Arts and Humanities exhibition is on view at the Manetti Shrem Museum from June 4 to June 20. “Museum visitors can expect to encounter multimedia exhibits, installations, sculpture, paintings, drawings and collage as well as performances that will encourage them to engage with art and design in new ways.” More information can be found here.
