SUMMARY:Honoring Placer County’s Silent War Heroes:
442nd RCT: “Go For Broke”
DESCRIPTION:Loomis\, CA — May 14\, 2026 7PM — Still Standing Guard\, a community group dedicated to preserving the stories and experiences of Japanese Americans in Placer County\, will host its annual program honoring local World War II veterans who served in the 442nd Regimental Combat Team.\nComposed almost entirely of American-born sons of Japanese immigrants (Nisei)\, the 442nd Regimental Combat Team became one of the most decorated units in U.S. military history for its size. These soldiers fought with distinction and risked their lives while their families endured discrimination at home and were incarcerated without due process.\nThe event will take place at the Loomis Veterans Memorial Hall on May 14\, 2026\, at 7:00 PM\, and is sponsored by American Legion John A. Stacker Post 775.\nAmong those honored is Frank Kageta who was incarcerated at Tule Lake and Heart Mountain\, Wyoming\, before serving in the U.S. Army. Though he passed away in 2016\, his words continue to resonate. In a statement prepared for the book Standing Guard: Telling Our Stories\, Kageta reflected:\n“Democracy as we know it today is founded in the Constitution and Bill of Rights. I want to leave you with a thought and challenge: Is the Constitution for all people at all times\, or are its guarantees conditional and subject to those in power?”\nThe program will also highlight the experience of Alfred Nitta\, who recalled returning home after the war to find signs in local businesses reading\, “We Don’t Do Business with Japs!” His son\, John Nitta\, shared:\n“My dad was very proud to be a member of the 442nd. Even though he didn’t see front-line action\, he believed his service proved his loyalty to his country.”\nThis moving tribute invites the community to step beyond the history books and engage with personal stories of courage\, sacrifice\, and resilience. Through archival newsreels and firsthand accounts\, attendees will experience the spirit of “Go For Broke” that defined these soldiers’ commitment to serve their country and fight for freedom.\nThe event is open to the public. Reservations are not required and a $10 donation at the door is requested.
