A key club in Midtown Sacramento’s music scene is going silent to focus on its sister venue. Goldfield Trading Post at 17th and J streets will close, ending an 11-year run.
Owners Eric Rushing and Bret Bair are closing the Sacramento location to focus on their larger Roseville operation, Rushing confirmed in an email to Abridged.
The second location opened in downtown Roseville in 2021, filling the former Ninja Sushi & Teriyaki space. The venue has brought in a variety of acts including pop artist Chappel Roan in 2023 before her rise to stardom, The New York Times reported.
Goldfield Trading Post opened in 2014 as a country-themed venue and restaurant at 1630 J St. It’s since expanded to other genres, especially punk and heavy metal. In May, Goldfield in Midtown announced it was scaling back its operations and open only on show nights due to slow business, the Sacramento Business Journal reported.
The calendar on the Goldfield website shows performances at the Midtown venue through the end of November, with a show by ska and punk bands Voodoo Glow Skulls and Authority Zero on Nov. 23. After that, all shows are slated for Roseville.
The building on the corner of 17th and J streets previously housed Sam’s Hof Brau and Hamburger Mary’s. In 2023, Bair and Rushing took over the other space in the building to open Tack Room, an equestrian-themed cocktail bar.
Rushing and Bair are the former owners of Ace of Spades, which Live Nation bought in 2016. The business partners also previously owned Old Ironsides. Bair co-owns 8-Track, an 80s-themed bar in the former Press Club spot at 21st and P streets.
