Last week, we were thrilled to welcome Sena Christian to the Abridged by PBS KVIE team as our first-ever enterprise editor. It’s a new role, and an important one — Sena will work closely with our regular contributors and alongside our editing team to shape the high-impact journalism our staff produces for you each week.
Sena brings nearly two decades of local journalism experience to the role. She got her start covering education at the Benicia Herald, a brick-and-mortar operation where residents would wander in off the main street just to talk. It’s a lesson in listening she’s carried through newsrooms ever since, including stints at the Sacramento News & Review, the Roseville Press Tribune and Comstock’s magazine. Most recently, she served as editorial director of the Solving Sacramento journalism collaborative.
“I’ve been closely watching Abridged since its launch last September, hoping for the opportunity to one day get involved,” Sena said. “I’m excited that day has come. Abridged has established itself as a trusted news source and I’m looking forward to supporting the work of our journalists whose stories really impact our community.”
A Sacramento native, Sena has built a career reporting on farming and food systems, conservation, and the environment across the American West, with bylines in Newsweek, The Guardian, High Country News, YES! Magazine, Ensia, Civil Eats, Sacramento Magazine, and right here at Abridged. She’s a proud product of the community college system, holds a bachelor’s from UC Berkeley and a master’s from the University of Oregon, and was a Ted Scripps Fellow in Environmental Journalism at CU Boulder. These days, she also teaches journalism at Sacramento City College.
Outside the newsroom, you’ll find her coaching youth soccer or working on her independent publishing venture, Underbite Press.
